What is a long distance relationship and why do we get into them?

Updated: Apr 12, 2023

A long-distance relationship is a romantic relationship where the partners are physically separated by a significant distance, such as living in different cities, states, or even countries. The partners may not be able to see each other as often as they would like, and may rely on technology such as phone calls, video chats, and text messages to stay in touch. Long-distance relationships can be challenging because the partners are not able to spend as much time together in person and may have to rely on communication to maintain their connection.

Long-distance relationships can be as short as a few months or as long as several years. During this time, couples need to make an extra effort to build and maintain trust, intimacy, and intimacy. They also need to work on maintaining open lines of communication and being honest with each other about their feelings and concerns.

Despite the challenges, many people find that the effort they put into a long-distance relationship is worth it because of the depth of the connection they have with their partner.

Some statistics about LDRs

According to a study by the Center for the Study of Long-Distance Relationships, approximately 14 million people in the United States consider themselves to be in a long-distance relationship. This is about 3.75% of the population. The study also found that long-distance relationships are more common among college students, with as many as 30% of college students reporting that they are in a long-distance relationship. Additionally, research has found that couples in long-distance relationships can have just as much or more trust and satisfaction in their relationship than those who live in close proximity.

Why do people get into Long Distance relationships?

People get into long-distance relationships for a variety of reasons. Some common reasons include:

  • Falling in love with someone who lives in a different city or country

  • Being in a relationship with someone who has to move away for work, school, or other reasons

  • Meeting someone online or while traveling and wanting to maintain the relationship despite the distance

  • Wanting to have a long-distance relationship as a trial run before committing to a long-term, in-person relationship

Some people may enter into a long-distance relationship because they feel that the distance will strengthen the bond between them and their partner, or because they believe that the challenges of the distance will make their relationship stronger. Others may see it as a temporary solution until they can be together in the same place again.
